This print depicts a screech of 6 black headed seagulls and 3 crabs. It is hand-printed using a baren, and blocks and stamps carved out of Japanese vinyl. The blocks are used for the birds, the stamps for the crabs.

The design is based on an einstein tessellation. Here, “einstein” derives from two German words “ein” and “stein”, meaning “one stone”: a single shape can tile a flat surface without any gaps. Astonishingly, the tessellation is aperiodic. That is, however large the surface, the pattern will never repeat.

I live by the sea, and admire the seagulls’ acrobatic flight. If there’s any sign of food they squabble amongst themselves.
