This print depicts a screech of 13 black headed seagulls. It is hand-printed using a baren and three blocks carved out of Japanese vinyl. Two blocks show the gull one way around, the third is a mirror image.

The design is based on an einstein tessellation. Here, “einstein” derives from two German words “ein” and “stein”, meaning “one stone”: a single shape can tile a flat surface without any gaps. Astonishingly, the tessellation is aperiodic. That is, however large the surface, the pattern will never repeat. The tile has 13 sides and there are 13 birds in the design.
