This print depicts a flock of 30 black headed seagulls. It is hand-printed using a baren and three blocks carved out of Japanese vinyl. Two blocks show the gull one way around, the third is a mirror image.

The design is based on an einstein tessellation. Here, “einstein” derives from two German words “ein” and “stein”, meaning “one stone”: a single shape can tile a flat surface without any gaps. Astonishingly, the tessellation is aperiodic. That is, however large the surface, the pattern will never repeat.

I live by the sea, and seagulls are all around.
